The hair, the bow and the flower - Family Photographer

I really have an awesome family. Just in case I didn't tell you that before.

Since all my siblings were in the state for my graduation, we did a photo shoot.

Dilemma. How do I do a family shoot for my own family whilst still being in pictures?
Answer. Very carefully. (Translation: ask a friend to help!)

I had a bajillion ideas to use, and a new location to shoot in. Plus, the light was gorgeous.

My family's pretty used to me shooting them (constantly), so they were all up for my crazy ideas.
("Wait, why are we standing in a line??")

I never get tired of this picture. (That was NOT my idea, Brian.)

I love the little details in this shot. And I love that Hannah is the only one turned the wrong way.... :)

These girls are the most photogenic children I've ever encountered. Josh had a little too much fun shooting them too! (See?? I told you it's waaaay too easy!)

Yup. These are my nieces. (Hannah takes after me.)

I'm realizing more and more what a detail shooter I am.

I got really excited yesterday.

Rachel and Jason's album had finally arrived!!

They're getting hitched tomorrow, and this is their guestbook/signature book.

I love albums with pretty pictures inside.

And I can't wait to capture their marriage tomorrow.

Things can get crazy at photo shoots sometimes.

Ok, so I go crazy at photo shoots sometimes.

When I arrived to shoot this lovely family, I couldn't figure out why my camera's focus point wasn't moving! I panicked. Somehow(Don't ask me how...), I made it through the photo session with the focus locked in the top left corner. I thought for sure my camera was broken, and I was sure all my pictures were out of focus!! I wanted to cry.

I ran to the nearest National Camera Exchange as soon as we were done. The lady there must've thought I was nuts.

"I can't figure out why my focus position isn't moving!!"

"Well, do you have it locked?"

"Locked...?"

Locked? As in... hello? Don't you know how to use your dSLR camera??

I had accidentally flipped a switch that locked my focus position in place. Pretty sure the switch was in plain sight the entire shoot, and I never bothered to look. Pretty sure I've used it a million times. Pretty sure I felt like a moron. Pretty sure I fail at taking pictures! :)

Yeah well... I laughed. Hard. So did the lady at National.

"Oh, don't feel bad! It happens all the time!"

Ahuh. Sure it does. :)

Anyway, I had a lovely time with the Stampers! Despite my mishaps, we got some AWESOME pictures... and I wish I could share all the moments with you. Here are just a few!

I LOVE toes.

Elizabeth flew all the way from Guam to be with her family! It was so fun to have her there!

But here's why -

I graduated! WOOT!

Thanks to all those who came to my wonderful party; full of waffles and parfait! Mm... yummy times.

I, naturally, had my camera on me most of the day. It started out with the celebration of Cari's 2 year birthday.

Dad was trying on his new hats. I like this one. A lot.

Evie was a little overwhelmed.

Graduation party aside, this was probably the highlight of my day. Ahh.... Brian. The things we do to you...

My day was wonderful and I had SO much fun visiting with everyone. But Dad didn't make it very long.

The tall, skinny, quirky, in love... couple.

"Oh them!!" You say...

They're hard to forget.

Well, we did another engagement session together.

Talk about GORGEOUS light!!

It was one of those sessions where I was giddy about every shot. Literally giddy. (Just ask my assistant) :)

They try to act so cool....

But we all know they're very sweet. I can't wait for their wedding!! :)

I fell in love with Jason's car last fall. Full of awesome texture and character.

And not just because it's from South Dakota...

There they are... heading into the mosquito swarms. It was SO buggy. Luckily, they were both very good swatters.

We did these all in Delano.

I LOVE my town. And I'm always finding new places to shoot.

I love the texture in this one... And the lines. I freak out when I see design like this. (Mel knows... I get this artsy look in my eye... )

I watched my dad throw up this week. I watched him shiver under blankets as he tried to get warm. I watched him eat painfully because of the sores in his mouth. I've watched him lose weight and hair.

I've also watched him hope.

My dad has hope. Hope in Christ. Hope from Christ. There is no other hope. There is no one else to hope in.

Psalm 62:5

"My soul, wait in silence for God only, for my hope is from Him."

There is a sticky note in our kitchen.

Mom placed it there about two months ago.

It has one word: breathe.

I laughed at her at first. Then I understood. Sometimes she forgets. Sometimes I forget.

To breathe.

Breath comes from God. We're not guaranteed it - it's a gift. It's all grace.

Praise the Lord for His grace!

Tonight, I wrote another sticky note.

Hope.

Hope is a choice. A choice to believe that God IS good, and that He IS sovereign. To hope in the face of Satan's attacks. To hope in the face of suffering. To hope in the face of death.

It's a choice my dad has made. It's a choice my mom has made.

I hung out with a lovely bunch of high school kidlets a couple weeks ago. I say kidlets - even though I'm still a senior - cause they all feel like my little brothers and sisters. I love them. All of them. :)

(Except for the ones I don't know.)

Anyway, it was Junior/Senior for their school, so we did a photo shoot. A rockin' AWESOME photoshoot. And we had a little too much fun. Is that possible?

Hmm... Maybe.

They were a rowdy group.

(Don't worry guys, we did get some good smiling ones. These are just the fun ones that I like. A lot. :)

We did them downtown by the James J. Hill Library. I'd never been down there before and had lots of fun getting lost on city streets, making u-turns, and trying to get our huge truck to fit in small parking ramps.

She introduced me to a new friend - chai tea. I love chai tea. It's soooooo good. So good!

Joshua had a birthday, and wanted to celebrate with pictures!! We've known Joshua since he was saved - it seems like so long ago! Joshua's like a big brother to me, and I was happy to do a shoot with him.

He looks pretty alive to me, don't you think?

Yup. That's right... God's got a sweet plan for him. :)

Renee is my classmate.

She's a photographer like me.

Not to mention drop dead gorgeous. Guess who ends up being the model for class exercises ALL the time? :)

She's engaged, and I had the pleasure of doing her engagement photos. (I really wish I could do your wedding photos...)

The great thing about shooting other photographers is that they know exactly how to pose.

Most of the time. (Except when they get distracted...)

But hey, they're engaged. I don't blame them. :)

But sometimes it's super intimidating to photograph fellow photographers. Cause they know everything you're doing. Right or wrong.

Cause what if my camera doesn't focus right?? What if all my pictures are over-exposed?? What if they're blurry?? What if she doesn't like how I edit them?? What if...

Yeah.

But, I tried to act as if I knew what I was doing. (Keyword = act)

Really, though, they were a super cute couple. And they put up with the rain for me... :)

I was so excited to go outside and take pictures yesterday. Fortunately, the girls' egg hunt provided the perfect opportunity for a mini session.

I've gotten a lot of complements about how I tell stories with my photos. Thank you! :) Anyone who knows me knows that I take a lot of photos. A LOT. I love every facial expression, every movement, every angle, every moment. I love capturing moments.

I did a photoshoot with them before they left for the Dominican Republic last week. I finally got some done. Hope you like them!

I worked in the studio this morning, and brought in my nieces. Cause they're adorable. Right? :)

Evie was great! :) She's such a great little model, it's almost too good to be true!

First off, I'll get the random photos out of the way. We were at Becky and Andy's for lunch yesterday and, like good Normans, we sat around the table and talked for an hour. And of course, the lighting was gorgeous.
This is the impromptu photoshoot that occurred.

I love shooting water. Especially on water proof tablecloths.

My mother is gorgeous. Isn't she? :)

It must run in the family, cause her granddaughter got it too.

I love Evie.

She's MY niece. (Not yours. She's mine.)

You have to be a fast photographer to catch all her different moods. Here's a sequence of photos I took in about 3 seconds:

If you haven't noticed, I have a thing for eyelashes. And my f1.4 lens. (Tidbit for photographers: this is short lighting, two thirds facial angle, open loop, window lighting.)

This is my sister Becky. You've seen her before. She's beautiful too.

Obviously, the cuteness keeps getting passed on.

I love the moments that happen between mother-daughters.

Then, we played around and had some fun. I know this is photo is a bit odd, but it's one of my favorites for the day.

Brian is a low key kinda guy.

He occasionally lets me take pictures of him.

But only when he's in a good mood.

He's kinda quiet and reserved - at first. Then you can't shut him up. (I know I know... I'm such a nice sister...)

So there's this guy named Jose...

Not him. That's Brian. Ignore him.

Jose came from the Dominican Republic to meet us. (He's dating Mel, you see...)

While he was here, we went out to eat for mom's birthday.

I couldn't resist snapping a cute one.

The Chinese people were so sweet. They brought out oranges for mom's birthday.

Melissa wasn't so sure about that eggroll...

We went shopping; just us girls. And had fun trying on sunglasses.

It was cold.

Before they left, Mel and Jose made us some sort of Dominican food that I can't spell. It was delicious.

During the week, I also took a few pictures of them - "professional style". Those are coming soon. :)

Brian | aka Spiffy

Brian looked spiffy on Sunday. Mucho spiffy. So I begged him to do pictures. BEGGED. Cause that's what sisters are for, right?

He obliged.

Barely.

I have decided that I really like taking pictures of people's hands and feet - pretty much anything besides the head.

Oops. I lied. I like eyes too.

Not that I don't like heads. Cause I do.

Heads make funny expressions. (Faces, heads... same thing...)

I've also decided that I really like it when people do their own expressions and posing, with little or no help from me.

And I only like cell phones in pictures when they aide the model in smiling. Otherwise, they can be distracting.

Falling roofs are helpful for unique expressions.

I take a lot of vertical photos.

Backlighting is my new favorite thing to do.

And... brothers are the best. Love you bud!

Heather and I were bored and had nothing to do on Saturday. So we decided to take pictures.

Actually, that's not true. We planned it in advance. It just sounded better that way. Oh well...

I did her senior photos last summer, and we decided since I wasn't very good then... we'd do more. I instructed Heather to bring a really fun umbrella - cause it WAS supposed to rain. But it didn't. And we had fun with it anyway! It's my new favorite prop. :)

We did her photo shoot downtown by the Nicollet Mall. It was my first time working down there. Definitely not my last... :)

Heather, this is probably one of my favorites!! :)

I couldn't keep her still - she kept wanting to dance. Then I set her lose. And clicked away...

By the end of our shoot, Heather was a natural model - striking the perfect pose, before I asked her. :)

Mom, Dad and I attended a 9-11 memorial concert on Sept 11th. They passed out candles, and later in the evening we lit them. I only took 3 photos and here they are, unedited.
The whole evening was beautiful.
